Bergdorf Goodman Window
The aim of this project was to create a design for a Bergdorf Goodman Window revolving around a rebel who has challenged social norms.
Sofia Isella (my chosen rebel) is a musician who challenges the treatment and expectations placed on women under the patriarchy. The main focus of her art is to create visuals, music, and lyrics that unsettle her audience by holding a mirror up to the current state of our society. Sofia also makes commentary within her lyrics about normalcy and how disturbing topics have become normalized due to our repeated exposure to them. She talks about the way women are viewed in this way including the sexualization and infantilization of women.
Many of my ideas were inspired by her song doll people. The idea that women are viewed as dolls in the lives of men is tied with ideals placed on women such as being a housewife and mother. These ideas are also present in toys marketed to girls. Using these toys to represent these ideas also comes from the infantilization of women that Sofia sings about. I wanted to show just how disturbing these ideas are by breaking and challenging the dollhouses and toys representing them.
